Pygmy Indian Chickens

I bet you thought I was talking about a new breed of chicken.

I'm not.  

While I was away, 

3 of my new pullets came under attack.  

The 2 Wyandottes were kidnapped

and the Cuckoo Maran was scalped

by savages.

Ok, so really the Wyandottes were taken by a hawk or fox

and the Cuckoo Maran was pecked by her coop mates.

She's currently rehabbing in the chicken hospital in my laundry room.

I didn't expect her to make it through the first night since she was pecked down to her skull,

but there she is, chillin' and eating and drinking and enjoying life.

Here are the new chicks who are 

at the moment

nameless.

The 2 Golden Laced Wyandottes are to the left and right

with the Cuckoo Maran in the back.

Hopefully they'll grown to be excellent egg layers!

Someone is Eating the Sun!

As a kid, I enjoyed reading a book called Someone is Eating the Sun

It's about some farm animals that freak out because the sun is disappearing.

They think someone is eating it, only to learn at the end of the book that it's just a solar eclipse.

  It starts off with Hen who is picking at corn when she notices

 the sky getting darker and she takes off with a 

"flippity flap and a flutter".

Lately the chickens have been randomly taking off with 

a flippity flap and a flutter 

and I think about that book every time.  

Only my chickens are running for no apparent reason.

Pullet?

Here is a shot of Nugget (on the left) and Zombie (on the right) the new Golden Laced Wyandottes.

I'm a little concerned that maybe Nugget isn't going to be laying any eggs,

but rather fertilizing them.

That is, I'm thinking she's a he.

That won't be good.

We don't want any Roosters here at the Wannabe Farm

and my young son is already worked up over the possibility that Nugget might need a new home.

I'm hoping maybe Nugget is just a little older or a little more "developed" that her buddy Zombie.

Time will tell.

they were named by a 6 year old boy.
